Statement on Hays County Judge Blocking Expansion of License Plate Readers

WHEN SAFETY WAS ON THE LINE, JUDGE BECERRA SAID NO.

“This isn’t about privacy — it’s about politics. And it’s the kind of weak leadership that puts our neighborhoods in danger.”

TAHUAHUA STANDS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT

DRIPPING SPRINGS, TX- This week, Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra chose to delay a vote that would have expanded the use of license plate reader (LPR) cameras across our community. These devices are a proven tool that help law enforcement catch criminals, recover stolen vehicles, and keep our neighborhoods safe. But instead of protecting our families, Judge Becerra wants to eliminate these cameras from Hays County altogether.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t about privacy. It’s about politics. And it’s the kind of weak leadership that puts our neighborhoods in danger. When drug traffickers and criminals are passing through our roads, law enforcement needs every available tool to stop them.

I stand with our Sheriff’s Office, Constable’s, and every Hays County resident who wants to feel safe in their community. These cameras aren’t about mass surveillance — they’re smart, targeted tools used to prevent crime before it escalates. According to Flock Safety, 10% of all reported crime in the U.S. is solved using this technology. Delaying their use isn’t leadership — it’s putting politics over public safety.

That’s why I’ve advocated for including these cameras in the City of Dripping Springs budget. It’s also why I support their use in North Hays, where they’ve enhanced patrols and strengthened the Sheriffs and Constables offices. This is how we keep our communities safe — with tools that work and leadership that leads.

In Hays County, people expect their leaders to protect families, not appease activists. As County Judge, I’ll always put public safety first — with no apologies.
